This school year brought a unique opportunity to work closely with the Catholic School board system in Calgary through a partnership with The City of Calgary Sporthub Program. Our team had the privilege to lead basketball focused physical education classes across several schools, including Holy Trinity, St Henry, St Benedict, and St Bernadette. This experience allowed us to witness firsthand how young students develop their basketball skills, understanding, and passion for the game.
Bringing Basketball to Life in Elementary Schools
Our program focused on teaching the fundamentals of basketball to students from Kindergarten through grade 6. We covered essential skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and team play. Each lesson was carefully aligned with the physical education curriculum, ensuring that students not only enjoyed the sport but also met educational standards.
Watching entire schools grow in their basketball abilities was inspiring. Students who started with little knowledge of the game quickly improved their ability. The excitement could be heard from the gymnasium and would spill into the hallways. Basketball was the highlight of all the students week.
Collaboration Within the School Community
One of the most rewarding aspects of this program was working alongside principals, teachers, assistant teachers, and maintenance staff. Being part of the school ecosystem for the week gave us insight into how a school community functions beyond the classroom. This collaboration helped create a supportive environment where students felt encouraged to try new things and improve.
The support from school staff was essential in managing classes smoothly and ensuring that students stayed engaged. Their involvement also helped us tailor our coaching to fit each school's unique culture and needs.
Growth and Learning Throughout the Year
As the year progressed, our team gained invaluable experience that improved the quality of our sessions. We learned how to adjust our coaching methods to different age groups and skill levels, making each class more effective and enjoyable. This continuous improvement benefited not only the students but also our other programs.
The positive feedback from schools and parents confirmed that our approach was making a difference. Many students expressed a newfound love for basketball, and some even signed up for community Sporthub basketball lessons.
Looking Ahead to the Next School Year
Building on this school year, we have committed to working with six more schools next school year. This expansion will include Calgary Board of Education (CBE) public schools. A special highlight will be our first time working with a junior high school, Bob Edwards, which holds personal significance as it is the alma mater of Coach Wahid, the owner of Calgary Impact.
This next phase promises to bring new challenges and opportunities to foster athletic skills in young minds across Calgary.
Acknowledging the Team Behind the Program
None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our coaches and the support from everyone involved in the Sporthub organization at the City of Calgary. Organizers, programmers, sponsors, and volunteers all played a crucial role in making this program a success. Their commitment to youth sports and community engagement helped create a positive experience for students and staff alike.
