This spring marked an important milestone for Team White as we entered our fourth year with a fresh roster and renewed energy. Our U16 team, mainly composed of grade 9 and 10 boys, took a significant step by registering for the Calgary Minor Basketball Association (CMBA) League for the first time. This decision aimed to provide the team with a consistent and competitive season, structured around three key tournament weekends. The journey was full of highs and lows, learning moments, and strong team spirit that carried us through to a solid finish.
Weekend 1: Pool Deciding Games
The season kicked off with pool deciding games designed to place teams into appropriate brackets based on their performance. Our first game started early at 8 a.m., and the team was understandably a bit shaky. Having only played one exhibition game before, the players were still grasping the basics of team play and game flow. Despite this, the coaching duo of Coach Shadrack and Coach Aaron brought valuable experience to the court. Their adjustments during the games helped the team find its rhythm quickly.
By the end of the weekend, Team White had secured three wins and zero losses. This strong start positioned us as a favourite in the league and boosted the players confidence. This weekend showed that while the team was still learning, the foundation was solid and the potential was clear.
Weekend 2: Pool Play
2 weeks following our success in the first weekend, Team White was placed in the B division for pool play. This round proved to be more challenging. We faced older, more experienced teams with better chemistry and more polished teamwork. The difference in experience was noticeable, and the results reflected that as we went 0-3 over the weekend.
Though the losses were tough, the team remained motivated. The coaching staff focused on analyzing the games and identifying areas for improvement. Practices after this weekend emphasized teamwork, communication, and adapting to different styles of play. The players understood that the season was far from over and that the playoffs still offered a chance to finish strong.
Playoffs:
The playoffs introduced a new level of pressure with a single-elimination format similar to the NCAA style. Every game was win or go home, which tested the team’s mental toughness and resilience. On Friday night, Team White played with determination and secured a win that advanced us to the next round.
Saturday morning brought another victory, this time earning a spot in the finals. The team showed great heart and skill, but ultimately fell short in the championship game, finishing second in the B division. This was a commendable achievement given the challenges faced throughout the season.
An additional challenge during playoffs was the absence of some key players who were called up to participate in the North Pole Hoops tournament in Edmonton. This required the coaching staff to adjust lineups and strategies on the fly, further testing the team’s depth and adaptability.
Lessons Learned and Looking Ahead
Team White’s spring season in the CMBA League was a valuable experience for everyone involved. The early success showed what the team could achieve with strong coaching and commitment. The tougher pool play weekend highlighted the importance of experience and chemistry, pushing the team to improve quickly. The playoffs demonstrated the players’ ability to compete under pressure and adapt to unexpected challenges. We look forward to competing in more CMBA competitions. Thank you to all the parents who were very supportive this season.
