This January, the top players from Calgary Impact embarked on a groundbreaking journey to Nogales, Mexico. This marked a significant milestone for Calgary Impact. The trip was more than just a basketball tournament; it was an extraordinary opportunity to showcase our club's talent, resilience, and character on an international stage.

Joining me on this incredible trip were Vishal (V.Raw) and several dedicated parents. The journey was made possible by Calgary Impact's sister company, Crossover Consultancy, and a collaboration with a colleague working with the Sonora state government.

Our roster was a testament to Calgary’s diversity, featuring players from every corner of the city, each bringing their unique strengths to the court:

  • Sam Gauley

  • Karl Suwanakhosit

  • Luka Baal

  • Munir Abdi

  • Gurshaan Marahar

  • Nicky Marangoni

  • Darian Hall

  • Logan Nishikawa

  • Sumrath Sandhu

As a group, we were proud to represent Calgary as a united and diverse team, bound by a shared love for basketball. Each player’s unique experiences and backgrounds enriched the team’s character, and this diversity became our greatest strength as the boys came together to compete and grow—not just as athletes but as individuals.

Preparing for Success: A Professional Approach to an International Stage

Preparing for this trip required meticulous planning both on and off the court. Intense practices honed our skills to adapt to differences in playstyle, officiating, and FIBA rules. Beyond physical training, the logistics demanded extensive coordination.

Each player needed notarized paperwork to travel across three countries. We flew from Calgary (YYC) to Phoenix (PHX) and stayed overnight in a large Airbnb. The following day, our group—players, parents, and coaches—travelled with Natty's Shuttle from Phoenix to the Nogales border, crossing as a team.

Every detail was carefully managed, from formal invitations to travel documentation, to compliance with international protocols. These efforts ensured that our players could focus entirely on the competition and the experiences awaiting them in Mexico.

Competing with Passion and Precision

The tournament format was a round-robin, with three pool matches leading to the elimination round. We faced three teams based in Nogales, many of whose players were semi-pros competing in professional Mexican leagues.

Right out of the gate, on Friday, our team secured a victory, making a bold statement: we weren’t just invited—we were there to compete. The boys adjusted to a new style of play and officiating, battling their way to the semi-finals. In a hard-fought match, they narrowly lost by just two points.

Overall, the boys delivered an exceptional performance. Their effort, adaptability, and sportsmanship were remarkable. These games tested not only their physical skills but also their mental resilience, showcasing the growth they’ve achieved through dedication and hard work.

Off the Court: Life Lessons Beyond Basketball

This trip offered much more than competitive basketball. It was a chance for the boys to experience a different culture, navigate new environments, and gain a broader perspective on life. For many, it was their first time travelling internationally—a life-changing opportunity that I hope left a lasting impression.

One memorable moment was the Nintendo Switch tournament, where laughter and friendly competition brought the team even closer. From the hospitality of our hosts to the camaraderie shared among teammates, this trip was a powerful reminder of the transformative ability of sports to build character and create meaningful connections.

Looking Ahead: Bigger Stages, Greater Opportunities

The Mexico trip has set the stage for even greater opportunities in 2025. Future plans include tournaments in Edmonton, Las Vegas, and Hermosillo, Mexico. In Hermosillo, the team will compete in a professional arena and experience enhanced accommodations and infrastructure, providing a world-class basketball environment.

These upcoming events are designed to challenge our players further, expand their horizons, and solidify Calgary Impact’s place on the international basketball scene.

Thank You to Our Supporters

This journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our parents, partners, and community. Your dedication and belief in the program are the foundation of everything we achieve. Together, we’re building more than a basketball team—we’re creating a platform for young athletes to excel, both on and off the court.

To the boys: I don’t say this often, but I am extremely proud of each and every one of you. The way you conducted yourselves in Mexico—your professionalism, resilience, and ability to adapt to challenges—was nothing short of inspiring. For 15, 16, and 17-year-olds, you handled an unfamiliar environment with incredible maturity.

We at Calgary Impact are committed to providing professional, meaningful opportunities that inspire our players to reach their full potential. The future is bright, and this is only the beginning. Stay connected as we prepare for the exciting opportunities ahead as the journey continues!

Sincerely,

Coach Wahid & the Calgary Impact Team
